Charis New Building Project

Give Toward Building

We’re buying our first building!

We just need to fix a few things. Read on for the whole story.

Almost 2 and a half years ago, Pastors Lawson and Barbara Perdue (our overseers and spiritual parents) came to visit and preach for us.  The next day we were killing time before their flight and they wanted to look at potential church buildings. Barbara told me later that she’d heard God say that morning, “Max and Molly are going to get a building.”

I drove them by some places I thought would be great for a church but then we got on the computer and looked at actual properties. Bear in mind, I thought we were mostly doing this for fun. We’d only planted the church about a year prior and were a long way from being able to afford our own place.

As we were looking online, we noticed there was a church for sale right by my house!  Pastor Lawson, being the man of action that he is, immediately decided we needed to go look at it.  He called the realtor and several minutes later we were walking around this huge, beautiful building.  At the time, they wanted 1.3 million dollars for it.

We all got excited and thought if they would come down in price that it would be a great deal.  However, after Molly and I got home and prayed about it, we thought it wasn’t the right time and that we needed to wait.

So, we just let it go.  Every now and then I’d drive by it and consider it, but mostly we were just happy doing what we were doing renting. Two years later something changed in my heart and I began to think about that building again.  Amazingly, it was still there and was now listed at 1.15 million!

I believe God always wanted us to have it and that He preserved it for us.  A few months ago, we made an offer and they agreed to sell it to us for $1,050,000.  By being patient and trusting God, we saved $250,000! During that time, we saved diligently and are able to make the necessary 30% down payment without raising any extra funds.

We’re excited because we believe this is the next step in the journey for us. This building will enable us to do so much more ministry.  Soon we’ll have midweek services, with youth and kid’s ministries. We’ll be able to host conferences with our friends from out of town. We’ll have a home base to do outreaches.  Our worship team will actually get to practice with our own stuff! And, Pastor Neil and I won’t have to unload the trailer every Sunday morning at 6:30. It’ll be awesome!

Buildings are just tools, but we believe this will be a powerful tool to help us continue to share the incredible news of God’s unconditional love and grace!  I can’t stress what a miracle it is to get something this nice this early on that is already a church. Jesus is faithful!

Because this building is already a church, we’re blessed that we can just move right in. There are some things we need to update, however. The biggest thing is the HVAC (heating and air conditioning) needs to be totally replaced. We estimate this will cost about $75,000. We’ll also need to fix some things on the roof, paint, fix carpet, and generally spruce things up. Thanks to Pastor Lawson, however, we already have 500 nice chairs!

I’d love to get this HVAC fixed before we move in so that we don’t have to worry about it. Also, it will save us money on utilities. If you’d like to be part of that, just click the “Give” link.  We’re thankful for you and all that God is doing!
